Changes to NHS dentistry in Wales from 1st April 2026

How does this affect our patients?
NHS Routine Examinations
At your check-up your dentist will assess your oral health and determine whether you are at low, medium or high risk of dental problems. Based on this they will recommend when you shoud return in accordance with national guidelines. If you are considered low risk and have a healthy mouth, you may only need a routine examination every 18 - 24 months. This approach is designed to ensure that patients who need treatment most can access NHS dental care.
NHS Fees
Your dental treatment continues to be subsidised by the NHS. However, the payment bands have been replaced by a care package system where fees are based on the type and level of care provided. All costs will be clearly explained by your dentist before any treatment begins, ensuring you have all the information needed to make an informed decision.
Laboratory Fees
Lab-made items eg dentures, crowns, bridges and veneers are no longer covered by the NHS so you will need to pay for those in addition to your care packages(s), unless you are exempt. The cost of lab work varies according to the treatment required.
NHS Payment
We require full payment or a minium deposit of £50 when booking your treatment care package with the balance due on the day of your appointment. We also require full payment for any lab work before it is manufactured.
NHS Missed Appointments
To help us offer appointments to as many patients as possible, we request 24 hours' notice to cancel a booking. Under NHS guidelines if you miss/arrive too late/short-notice cancel two (consecutive) or three (in total) appointments you may no longer be a listed patient with us and may have to re-registeer via the DAP.
